After a recently leaked audio showed Donald Trump threatening Georgia’s secretary of state to change the results of the 2020 presidential election, Democratic Congressman Don Beyer demanded a criminal investigation into the outgoing president and any officials who have helped push his conspiracy theories.
“The recording released yesterday establishes beyond a doubt that Donald Trump used the power of his office to threaten election officials, and to coerce them into committing criminal acts to overturn the election results,” Beyer of Virginia wrote in a series of tweets, referring to an hour-long call in which the president pressed Georgia’s Republican Secretary of State Brad Raffensperger to “find” enough votes to overturn President-elect Biden’s victory.
“Trump must be held accountable for his illegal acts and his attacks on the Constitution. Nothing less than a criminal investigation will serve,” Beyer said.
Trump accused Raffensperger of criminal activity for refusing to act on his baseless allegations of voter fraud.
As Beyer notes, this isn’t the only call Trump had regarding the election.
“Trump has held numerous meetings and calls with election officials and lawmakers in other states where he has attempted to negate election results,” Beyer noted Monday. “Those conversations should be examined by investigators to determine whether Trump engaged in additional criminal acts.”

This recording makes Nixon's "smoking gun" tape sound tame, but that tape captured only part of a larger criminal conspiracy.
