Republican Senator Kelly Loeffler, of Georgia, is being accused of violating federal law and is now facing multiple congressional ethics complaints.
The complaints, filed separately on Thursday by the American Democracy Legal Fund and the Georgia Democratic Party, accuse Loeffler of violating federal law and ethics rules barring senators from soliciting campaign contributions in federal buildings.
Loeffler solicited campaign contributions during a television interview with Fox News taped at the U.S. Capitol this week.
“We know that hundreds of millions of dark, liberal money is pouring into our state. That’s why it’s so important that everyone across the country get involved,” Loeffler said in the interview. “They can visit KellyforSenate.com to chip in five or 10 bucks, and get involved, volunteer.”
In addition to the ethics complaint, Georgia Democrats are asking the Department of Justice (DOJ) to investigate the matter, noting that U.S. criminal code prohibits senators from soliciting donations in federal buildings.
“Senator Loeffler deliberately violated the clear spirit and the intent of the law, and the basic principles of public integrity,” Scott Hogan, the executive director of the Georgia Democratic Party, wrote in a letter to the DOJ, according to The Hill.
“The Department of Justice must investigate Senator Loeffler immediately to hold her accountable and prevent further erosion of the public trust in our elected representatives.”
Loeffler did not immediately respond to a request for comment on the complaints.
