Hal Marx, the far-right Republican mayor of Petal, Mississippi, is refusing to step down from his post after releasing controversial statements defending the police officers who murdered George Floyd.

According to reports, the Petal Board of Aldermen held a meeting on Thursday in hopes of persuading Marx to resign. But the Republican mayor is refusing.

“I will never surrender to the mob mentality,” Marx declared.

Earlier this week, Marx insisted that the officers who arrested Floyd did nothing wrong and were the actual victims.

He tweeted saying:

“If you are talking about the incident in MN, I didn’t see anything unreasonable. If you can say you can’t breathe, you’re breathing. Most likely that man died of overdose or heart attack. Video doesn’t show his resistance that got him in that position. Police being crucified.”
