Back in 2009, Capt. Chesley “Sully” Sullenberger safely landed disabled US Airways Flight 1549 in the Hudson River. Now, he’s calling out Lara Trump for making fun of 2020 presidential candidate Joe Biden‘s speech impediment.
In an op-ed for The New York Times, Sullenberger says he was once was a stutterer and reminisced about how his stutter affected his life while growing up in Denison, Texas.
“Those feelings came rushing back when I heard Lara Trump mocking former Vice President Joe Biden at a Trump campaign event, with the very words that caused my childhood agony,” Sullenberger wrote.
Lara Trump decided to mock Biden’s speech impediment during a “Women for Trump” event in Iowa last week. “Every time he comes on stage and they turn to him, I’m like, Joe can you get it out, let’s get the words out, Joe,” she said. “You kinda feel bad for him.”
Sullenberger was shocked by what he heard from Lara Trump. He goes on to say that his disgust with Lara Trump goes “beyond politics.”
“Stop. Grow up. Show some decency. People who can’t have no place in public life,” Sullenberger wrote.
He then directed a message to children who stutter.
“You are fine, just as you are,” he wrote. “You can do any job you dream of when you grow up.”
“You can be a pilot who lands your plane on a river and helps save lives, or a president who treats people with respect, rather than making fun of them.”
