A Georgia woman tragically passed away after a bizarre series of events following a car crash. Shirley Obert, 67, survived the initial accident, only to fall down a well and lose her life shortly after, in what authorities are calling a “tragic accident.”
The incident began on Saturday, when Obert was involved in a car crash in Monroe County. Her family and local authorities immediately began searching for her. She was last seen wearing a red shirt and black pants, which police suggested might have been a Chick-fil-A work uniform. Despite the crash, Obert was able to escape from her vehicle, but while attempting to find help, she tragically fell into a well.
On Sunday, after an extensive search, police discovered her body at the bottom of a deep well, hidden under thick brush, near where her car had been found. According to the Monroe County Sheriff’s Office, “Mrs. Obert appeared to have been trying to go for help when this incident occurred. This appears to be a tragic accident.”
The well, which was covered by dense vegetation, would not have been easily visible, The Daily Mail reports. Authorities speculate that Obert might have been walking through the woods to get assistance when she unknowingly stepped into the well. “We do not know exactly how she ended up in the wooded area, where her car was found,” a spokeswoman from the Sheriff’s Office said. “Our best guess is that she was walking and trying to make her way out of the woods when she stepped into it.”
The community has been shaken by the sudden loss of Obert, who was remembered as a devoted wife and a loving mother of four. A GoFundMe page has been set up to support her family during this difficult time, as she did not have life insurance and was the sole provider for her husband, Mike. As of Monday afternoon, the page had raised over $7,000.
Her family, including her sister-in-law Tanya Obert Pinson, had initially taken to social media to ask for help finding her after the crash. “Please pray for my sister-in-love Shirley Obert, she was in a car accident and my family is looking for her,” Pinson posted on Facebook. Friends of Obert also expressed their heartbreak over her death, remembering her as someone who always gave the “best, tightest hugs.”

Vanessa Awtry, a close friend, posted about Obert after the news of her passing, calling her an “awesome lady” who was always there for others. “I’ll miss our run-ins in town and will forever miss those ‘get together’ plans we discussed but life never allowed time for,” Awtry wrote.
This tragic event has left her family, friends, and the community heartbroken as they remember Obert’s kindness and love. “We lost my sister-in-love, my brother lost his soulmate,” Pinson posted. “Please pray for my brother Mike Obert and their children, family, and friends.”
As authorities continue to investigate the circumstances of the crash and how Obert ended up in the well, her family is left to mourn the loss of a beloved mother, wife, and friend.
