GOP Senator and fervent Trump defender Lindsey Graham appeared to be shaking in his boots on Wednesday as he accused Senate Minority Leader Mitch McConnell of “shooting his colleagues in the back” for giving Democrats a special pathway to raise the debt limit without Republican interference, while warning about Donald Trump’s wrath over the deal.
In blunt remarks to the Senate Republican Conference, Graham issued forceful warning to Republicans that the former president will come down hard on any GOP senators who vote for McConnell’s agreement with Senate Majority Leader Chuck Schumer (D-NY), The Hill reports.
Citing a GOP senator who was at the meeting, The Hill reported that Graham harshly criticized McConnell, saying that the GOP leader had “led them on a charge up a hill and they were getting shot in the back.”
A second person familiar with Graham’s remarks confirmed the comment, according to The Hill.
Other Republican senators who heard the remarks also agreed that his comments were highly critical of the GOP leader’s handling of the debt limit standoff.
