Democratic congressman, Rep. Robert Garcia (D-CA), asserted on MSNBC’s “Morning Joe” that there is compelling evidence for investigating Donald Trump and his family over alleged acceptance of “bribes” from foreign governments. Garcia painted a damning picture, citing the House Oversight Democrats’ recent report that disclosed $7.8 million in foreign payments. He emphasized that this amount is just a fraction, with potential for an astronomical level of “grift.”
Garcia argued that the reported sum covers only two years and is derived from just four properties, whereas Trump owns hundreds globally. He accused the former president of violating the Constitution through acceptance of foreign payments and bribes. Expressing frustration over the limited scope of the investigation, Garcia urged the need for a more extensive inquiry into the hundreds of Trump’s businesses worldwide.
“This is an enormous grift, this is a violation of the Constitution, this is about foreign payments and bribes to the president of the U.S. from multiple foreign governments and countries,” Garcia explained. “I also just want to note because it’s important, what we have in front of us is really the tip of the iceberg. The nearly $8 million that we’re discussing is essentially not only a two-year window, it is only from four properties owned by Donald Trump. Donald Trump has hundreds, hundreds of properties and businesses around the world. we were very limited to what we could actually look at.
Highlighting the urgency of the situation, Garcia claimed that the investigation led by Rep. James Comer (R-KY), chair of the Oversight Committee, was prematurely halted, raising concerns about a cover-up. He called for the investigation to resume, insisting that the reported $7.8 million is merely the “tip of the iceberg.”
“We know the full scope of the hundreds of businesses and the bribes, it’s much larger, but Rep. James Comer (R-KY), of course, who chairs our Oversight Committee, stopped the investigation immediately,” he continued before adding, “This is very, very concerning. We demand this investigation to continue and to reveal the full scope of this incredible grift.”
In response to inquiries, Garcia stressed the credibility of the evidence, stating, “I mean, this report shows where the real grift and corruption and illegal activity is. We have receipts. We have bank records. We have accounting. It’s all there laid out in the report, and there is much more that has yet to be uncovered.”
He criticized House Republicans for what he perceived as hypocrisy in their pursuit of an impeachment against the Biden family while downplaying allegations against the Trumps.
“Republicans, it is incredible to see the hypocrisy that the House Republicans, that James Comer, that the new speaker are trying to put together with this impeachment scam that they have put together, essentially to try to attack the Biden family,” he concluded.
