Veteran Journalist Carl Bernstein on Sunday night identified 21 Republicans in the Senate who he said have privately slammed Donald Trump while publicly remaining silent as Trump attempts to undermine the results of the election via lawsuits based on false claims.
The Watergate reporter released the names of 21 lawmakers who he said have “expressed extreme contempt for Trump & his fitness to be POTUS” behind the scenes, saying on Twitter that he “wasn’t breaking any promises of confidentiality” because these senators have all expressed their disdain for Trump to others, including staff, lobbyists and White House aides.
Republican lawmakers have been scared of criticizing Trump publicly throughout his presidency. However, several of the senators that Bernstein named have publicly urged Trump to move on from the election, including Senators Mitt Romney (Utah), Ben Sasse (Nebraska), Susan Collins (Maine) —who have all acknowledged Biden’s victory— and Sen. Lisa Murkowski (R-Alaska) who said on Sunday that “it is time to begin the full and formal transition process” for President-elect Joe Biden.
On Saturday, Sen. Pat Toomey (R-Pa.) did the same, telling Trump that he has now “exhausted all plausible legal” challenges and that it’s time to concede.
The 21 GOP Senators who have privately expressed their disdain for Trump are: Portman, Alexander, Sasse, Blunt, Collins, Murkowski, Cornyn, Thune, Romney, Braun, Young, Tim Scott, Rick Scott, Rubio, Grassley, Burr, Toomey, McSally, Moran, Roberts, Shelby. (2/3)
