At Monday’s G7 summit in Alberta, Canadian Prime Minister Mark Carney abruptly cut off U.S. President Donald Trump during a tense press conference, stopping him mid-rant about immigration and “blue cities.”

Trump had started repeating familiar claims, accusing Joe Biden of letting “murderers, killers, people from gangs, people from jails” into the U.S. That’s when Carney stepped in.

“If you don’t mind, just — I’m going to exercise my role, if you will, as G7 chair, since we have a few more minutes with the president and his team, and then we actually have to start the meeting to address some of these big issues,” Carney said, halting the back-and-forth as reporters shouted more questions.

CNN’s Kristen Holmes noted the sharp shift in tone: “The prime minister learned his lesson from the last time… where it went completely off the rails.”

She added, “Carney stepping in to say, ‘We’re moving forward now. We need to finish our conversations, the behind-the-scenes.’”

In contrast to the usual brief press moments between world leaders, Trump has turned these meetings into open mic sessions. This time, Carney wasn’t having it.
