Joshua Stueve, a senior spokesperson for the Department of Justice (DOJ), has stepped down, explaining that he could no longer work in a “toxic work environment.” In his resignation letter, Stueve expressed frustration with the treatment he received from the new leadership.
“Simply put, I cannot continue to serve in such a hostile and toxic work environment, one where leadership at the highest levels makes clear we are not welcomed or valued, much less trusted to do our jobs,” Stueve wrote. He is not a political appointee and has worked in both Republican and Democratic administrations.
Stueve’s resignation adds to a growing list of resignations and firings in the federal government. This comes as the Trump administration’s Department of Government Efficiency (DOGE) begins reviewing various agencies to reduce spending.
DOGE, which was created by Elon Musk, has been given unusual access to the federal government’s internal systems since January 20. Its goal has been to cut parts of the government and pressure federal workers to leave their positions. Musk has also criticized federal employees, including at a recent Cabinet meeting.
In his letter, Stueve made it clear that his decision was not influenced by the results of the recent election. “It has been an honor to serve this department under multiple administrations led by both Republicans and Democrats, each of whom have previously treated career staff with respect and dignity,” he said.
He also expressed disappointment in how things had changed at the DOJ, saying it was “heartbreaking” to see that basic decency had disappeared. Stueve’s resignation comes shortly after Pam Bondi was sworn in as the new Attorney General.
Stueve ended his letter by wishing his former colleagues the best, calling them “true patriots” of the country. His resignation follows a series of other departures from the DOJ, including high-ranking officials, especially those involved in Trump’s criminal cases.
