President Donald Trump’s approval rating has plummeted to its lowest point of his second term, according to a new Quinnipiac University poll that paints a grim picture for the unpopular president.

Just 37 percent of registered voters approve of Trump’s performance, while 55 percent disapprove, marking an 18-point net negative rating—his worst since January 2021. Only 7 percent of respondents were undecided.

The decline is steep. In July, Trump’s approval stood at 40 percent, with 54 percent disapproving, putting him 14 points underwater. In one month, he has lost 3 percentage points in approval and gained another point in disapproval—a 4-point swing in the wrong direction.

Since taking office for his second term, Trump has seen a dramatic 21-point shift. In January, 46 percent of voters approved of his performance while 43 percent disapproved. The latest numbers represent both his lowest approval rating and highest disapproval rating of the term.

Trump’s previous low was recorded in early June, when 38 percent approved and 54 percent disapproved. His approval ticked up slightly in late June and July—hitting 41 and 40 percent, respectively—but disapproval remained flat at 54 percent. That fragile stability has now collapsed.

Even support among Republicans is showing signs of erosion. In August, 84 percent of Republicans said they approve of Trump’s job performance, down from 90 percent in July. Disapproval among Republicans ticked up from 8 to 9 percent, and the share who responded “don’t know” or skipped the question grew to 7 percent, up from 2 percent just a month earlier.

Democrats remain almost unanimously opposed. A staggering 98 percent of Democrats disapprove of Trump’s handling of his job, up from 95 percent last month.

Among independents—a key bloc—Trump continues to struggle. 58 percent disapprove, 31 percent approve, and 11 percent remain undecided or refused to answer. In July, 59 percent disapproved, 33 percent approved, and 8 percent didn’t say.

The Quinnipiac poll surveyed 1,220 self-identified registered voters nationwide between August 21 and 25, with a margin of error of ±3.4 percentage points.

With approval sinking and disapproval reaching record highs, the poll signals a deepening public dissatisfaction with Trump’s leadership. The president’s support base is still holding—but it’s showing cracks. And with the 2026 midterms already looming on the horizon, those cracks may soon become fractures.
