Former President Donald Trump has expanded his list of entities he wants to jail for being “unfair” to him. On Thursday, he intensified his criticism of Google, pledging to pursue criminal prosecution against the company if he regains the presidency. He accused the search giant of manipulating search results to favor Vice President Kamala Harris over him.
In a post on Truth Social, Trump asserted, “Google has illegally used a system of only revealing and displaying bad stories about Donald J. Trump… while only revealing good stories about Comrade Kamala Harris.”
He described this as an “ILLEGAL ACTIVITY” and urged the Justice Department to take action, stating that if he wins the 2024 election, he would seek prosecution against Google at the highest levels.
“This is an ILLEGAL ACTIVITY, and hopefully the Justice Department will criminally prosecute them for this blatant Interference of Elections,” he added. “If not, and subject to the Laws of our Country, I will request their prosecution, at the maximum levels, when I win the Election, and become President of the United States!”
Trump’s accusations appear to stem from a recent article by the Media Research Center (MRC), a right-wing nonprofit that positions itself as a defender of conservative values. The MRC claimed that Google has a history of election interference favoring liberal politicians, noting that a search for “Donald Trump presidential race 2024” placed his campaign website sixth, while Harris’s site appeared third.
The MRC also criticized Google for including “left-wing sources” such as CNN and The New York Times in its “Top Stories” box, alleging that this reflects a bias against Trump.
Tim Graham, MRC’s Executive Editor, stated, “Google is telling the reader that the most reliable sources of campaign news are liberal sources.”
However, the MRC’s claims lack verifiable evidence regarding Google’s search algorithms, which can vary significantly from day to day based on numerous factors. Critics argue that the focus of this narrative is less about genuine research and more about fueling Trump’s narrative of victimhood against perceived media bias.
In recent weeks, Trump has escalated his criticism of various figures and institutions, frequently suggesting imprisonment for political opponents. In August, he threatened to jail Meta CEO Mark Zuckerberg, alleging interference in the 2020 election due to Zuckerberg’s financial support for election administration initiatives.
