President Donald Trump suggested Wednesday that Elon Musk’s time in Washington might be coming to an end — and not a moment too soon.
During a cabinet meeting, Trump publicly thanked the billionaire for his controversial work leading the Department of Government Efficiency, which has cut tens of thousands of federal jobs. But the praise came with a parting message.
“We all want to thank you. You really have sacrificed a lot. They treated you unfairly,” Trump told Musk, referring to backlash and protests.
“Well, they do like to burn my cars, which is not great,” Musk replied.
“You have been treated unfairly,” Trump repeated. “But the vast majority of people in this country really respect and appreciate you, and this whole room can say that very strongly. Really been a tremendous help.”
Still, Trump hinted the Tesla CEO’s time in D.C. was wrapping up: “You opened up a lot of eyes as to what could be done. And we just want to thank you very much. And you know you’re invited to stay as long as you want, but at some point he wants to get back home to his cars.”
Musk’s “help” has come at a steep cost. His department has gutted critical government agencies, slashing staff at places like the National Weather Service and FEMA — all under the banner of cutting waste.
Now, even Trump seems ready to send Musk packing — with thanks, and a push toward the exit.
