President Donald Trump made some confusing statements on Friday regarding the war in Ukraine. First, he spoke about Russia’s heavy bombing of Ukraine, saying he’d consider sanctioning Russia because of it. But when a reporter asked if he still believed Russian President Vladimir Putin wanted peace with Ukraine, Trump seemed to contradict himself.

“I believe him,” Trump said, referring to Putin. “I believe him. I think we’re doing very well with Russia. But right now they’re bombing the hell out of Ukraine and… I’m finding it more difficult, frankly, to deal with Ukraine. And they don’t have the cards. They don’t have the cards.”

Trump went on to say that Ukraine needed to “get on the ball and get the job done.”

A reporter then asked Trump if he thought Putin was taking advantage of the fact that Trump had ordered military aid to Ukraine to be stopped last week. Trump responded, “No, I actually think [Putin’s] doing what anybody else would do. I think he wants to get it stopped and settled. And I think he’s hitting [Zelensky] harder than he’s been hitting him. And I think probably anybody in that position would be doing that right now. He wants to get it ended.”

Just a week earlier, Trump had attacked Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelensky in a meeting at the White House and also expressed some sympathy for Putin, even though Putin had started an unprovoked war against Ukraine.
