Trump Says He’d ‘Look at’ Deporting Elon Musk as Feud Escalates

A bitter fight between Donald Trump and Elon Musk just hit a new level—with Trump suggesting he might consider deporting the billionaire entrepreneur.

The clash began after Musk went on a tear Monday over a Senate spending bill he claims will blow up the national debt. “Every member of Congress who campaigned on reducing government spending and then immediately voted for the biggest debt increase in history should hang their head in shame!” Musk posted on X. “And they will lose their primary next year if it is the last thing I do on this Earth.”

He didn’t stop there. Musk posted a mock campaign ad with the word “LIAR” stamped across a Pinocchio face, warning: “Anyone who campaigned on the PROMISE of REDUCING SPENDING, but continues to vote on the BIGGEST DEBT ceiling increase in HISTORY will see their face on this poster in the primary next year.”

Musk threatened to form a new political movement called “the America Party,” saying, “If this insane spending bill passes, the America Party will be formed the next day.”

Trump fired back early Tuesday on Truth Social, targeting the billions in government money Musk’s companies rely on.

“Elon may get more subsidy than any human being in history, by far, and without subsidies, Elon would probably have to close up shop and head back home to South Africa,” Trump wrote. “No more Rocket launches, Satellites, or Electric Car Production, and our Country would save a FORTUNE. Perhaps we should have DOGE take a good, hard, look at this? BIG MONEY TO BE SAVED!!!”

Trump didn’t stop there. Speaking at the White House later Tuesday, he warned Musk could face serious consequences for challenging the bill.

“He’s upset that he’s losing his EV mandate,” Trump said. “He could lose a lot more than that, I can tell you right now. Elon could lose a lot more than that.”

When asked if he was talking about deporting Musk—a naturalized U.S. citizen—Trump said, “I don’t know, we’ll have to take a look.”

Then came the kicker: “We might have to put DOGE on Elon,” Trump said. “You know what DOGE is? DOGE is the monster that might have to go back and eat Elon. Wouldn’t that be terrible? He gets a lot of subsidies. Elon’s very upset that the EV mandate is going to be terminated.”

Trump has hinted at this before, but this time, the threat felt more personal. Musk’s businesses—Tesla, SpaceX, Neuralink, X (formerly Twitter), and his AI startup—rely heavily on federal contracts, tax credits, and regulatory approvals.

SpaceX gets the lion’s share of its revenue from government contracts. Tesla, while less reliant on contracts, benefits from policies like the $7,500 EV tax credit and emissions credits—programs that could vanish under Trump. JPMorgan estimates that losing those credits could cost Tesla over $3 billion a year.

Despite spending more than $275 million to support Trump and GOP candidates in 2024, Musk now finds himself in the crosshairs. Whether he follows through with launching his own party or backing a new slate of candidates remains to be seen. One thing is certain: Trump’s grip on the GOP is firm—and Musk is finding out just how far Trump is willing to go to keep it that way.
