Former President Donald Trump has announced he will “immediately pause” the tariffs planned on Mexico after having a “very friendly” conversation with Mexican President Claudia Sheinbaum.
“I just spoke with President Claudia Sheinbaum of Mexico. It was a very friendly conversation wherein she agreed to immediately supply 10,000 Mexican Soldiers on the Border separating Mexico and the United States,” Trump shared on Truth Social.
“These soldiers will be specifically designated to stop the flow of fentanyl, and illegal migrants into our Country,” he added.
Trump also said that he and Sheinbaum agreed to delay the tariffs for one month while the two countries negotiate.
“We further agreed to immediately pause the anticipated tariffs for a one month period during which we will have negotiations headed by Secretary of State Marco Rubio, Secretary of Treasury Scott Bessent, and Secretary of Commerce Howard Lutnick, and high-level Representatives of Mexico. I look forward to participating in those negotiations, with President Sheinbaum, as we attempt to achieve a ‘deal’ between our two Countries,” he concluded.
Earlier this week, Trump had announced new tariffs on imports from Mexico, Canada, and China. These tariffs, scheduled to take effect Tuesday, included a 25% duty on imports from Mexico and most goods from Canada (with a few exceptions, like a 10% tariff on energy products), as well as a 10% tariff on Chinese imports.
Sheinbaum also commented on the tariff pause, sharing that she and Trump had made agreements on both security and trade. She said Mexico will send 10,000 members of its National Guard to reinforce the border, and in return, the U.S. would work to prevent high-powered weapons from being trafficked into Mexico.
