Donald Trump has revealed he’s down to four finalists in his search for a running mate, likening the selection process to his former hit show, The Apprentice. The announcement of his potential vice president is anticipated to coincide with the start of next week’s Republican National Convention, where he is slated to secure the party’s presidential nomination.
Speaking on The Clay Travis & Buck Sexton Show, Trump expressed his preference to unveil his choice “at the convention, or just slightly before the convention, like Monday,” as the event kicks off that day. However, he acknowledged logistical challenges might push the decision to Tuesday or Wednesday.
“I’d love to do it Tuesday or Wednesday, actually, but for a lot of complex reasons you people understand, pretty much you don’t do that,” Trump added.
“I have some really, really good candidates. I may be leaning one way, and that changes some times,” the former president said. “All of sudden you see something that you like or don’t like and you lean a little differently. But we have a good bench. We have a very good bench.”
Senators Tim Scott, Marco Rubio, and JD Vance, along with North Dakota Governor Doug Burgum, comprise his shortlist.
Describing the selection process as “a highly sophisticated version of The Apprentice,” Trump highlighted the depth of his engagement with each candidate.
“They’re great people,” he said. “I got to know them very well. I’d say four people. Four of five people. But I got to know them very well. Some dropped out over the course of— they didn’t drop out. There were reasons why they wouldn’t have done as well.”
Despite previous adjustments to the lineup, Trump affirmed his decision-making would ultimately hinge on his instincts.
“I like to know all the facts before the instinct comes in,” he explained.
