Donald Trump doubled down on his bizarre story about a wealthy friend using a weight-loss injection—this time while speaking aboard Air Force One. The president told Fox News host Sean Hannity that the man called him after the story made headlines.
“I’m just glad I didn’t use his name,” Trump said. “He’s actually a very rich guy, he’s a very successful guy. He’s very happy, he knows exactly who I was talking about. He called, he said, ‘that was interesting.’ He said he was very concerned that I might use his name.”
The mystery man, according to Trump, doesn’t need to worry.
Trump first brought up the story earlier in the week at a press conference about lowering drug prices. Out of nowhere, he launched into a tale about a friend struggling with weight loss—and price tags.
“I’ll tell you a story. A friend of mine—he’s a businessman, very, very, very top guy. Most of you would’ve heard of him. Highly neurotic, brilliant businessman, seriously overweight, and he takes the fat shot drug,” Trump said.
Then he quoted the friend directly: “‘I’m in London. And I just paid for this damn fat drug I take.’ I said, ‘It’s not working.’” Trump added, “‘I just paid $88. And in New York I pay $1,300. What the hell is going on?’”
Trump didn’t name the man, but the description—rich, famous, overweight, and “highly neurotic”—set off speculation. Now, Trump says the man was watching closely and was “very concerned” his name might slip.
“He called,” Trump said, “and said, ‘that was interesting.’”
