In a charged atmosphere at a rally in Atlanta, former President Donald Trump drew loud chants of “lock her up” directed at Vice President Kamala Harris on Monday, reflecting the escalating tensions of the 2024 presidential race.

Speaking to supporters, Trump criticized Harris, stating, “Next Tuesday, you have to stand up and you have to tell Kamala Harris that you’ve had a terrible, terrible run, that you’ve hurt our country very badly.”

He accused her of allowing murderers, drug dealers and terrorists to enter the United States, claiming, “You’ve accepted some of the worst criminals in the world into our country. You’re going to say, ‘Please say it, sir.’ I say I will. Kamala, you’re fired. Get out of here. Get out of here,” he said, as the crowd erupted into chants of “lock her up,”

Trump responded with a light-hearted, “Be nice.”

Historically, the phrase “lock her up” has been associated with former Secretary of State Hillary Clinton, who was the target of similar chants during the 2016 election. However, the shift in focus to Harris indicates a deepening of the confrontational tone as the upcoming election approaches.

This rally is not an isolated incident; earlier this year, similar calls were heard directed at Trump during the Democratic National Convention, where attendees chanted “lock him up” as Clinton spoke about the former president’s legal challenges.

President Biden last week also called for Trump to be jailed before catching his slipup, adding “politically lock him up.”

Trump campaign spokesperson Karoline Leavitt responded to President Biden’s recent suggestion that Trump should be jailed, stating, “Joe Biden just admitted the truth: he and Kamala’s plan all along has been to politically persecute their opponent President Trump because they can’t beat him fair and square.” She further urged Harris to condemn Biden’s remarks, framing the current administration as a significant threat to democracy.

As the 2024 election season heats up, rhetoric from both sides continues to intensify, signaling a contentious battle in the final week before election day.
