In a Friday morning tweet, President Donald Trump praised gun-toting protesters who stormed the Michigan state Capitol and urged Gov. Gretchen Whitmer to “make a deal with them.”
Armed demonstrators crowded into the statehouse Thursday to demand Gov. Whitmer lift social distancing restrictions during the coronavirus pandemic. At least one protester called for Gov Whitmer’s execution, and a state senator said some lawmakers wore bulletproof vests to carry out their legislative duties.
But that didn’t stop Trump from praising the armed protesters as “very good people” and call on the governor to give in to their demands.
“The Governor of Michigan should give a little, and put out the fire,” Trump tweeted. “These are very good people, but they are angry. They want their lives back again, safely! See them, talk to them, make a deal.”
Trump’s tweet echoes similar comments he made about armed white supremacists who rallied nearly three years ago in Charlottesville, Virginia, and killed a counter-protester.
