Donald Trump, who has evaded criminal prosecution for years, has been indicted by a Manhattan grand jury. His indictment has been filed under seal and charges are not known publicly yet, according to CNN’s Kara Scannell and John Miller.

The charges against the former president will be announced in the coming days. But the Manhattan district attorney’s office will reach out to Trump’s attorneys to discuss his surrender to face an arraignment, the network reported.

It is the first time in American history that a current or former president will face criminal charges.

The indictment is the culmination of the Manhattan district attorney’s investigation into Trump’s alleged role in a hush money payment scheme and cover-up involving adult film star Stormy Daniels that dates to the 2016 presidential election.

As noted by CNN, “the decision is sure to send shockwaves across the country, pushing the US political system – which has never seen one of its ex-leaders confronted with criminal charges, let alone while running again for president – into uncharted waters.”
