A local chapter of the Libertarian Party in Texas has filed a resolution calling for the impeachment of President Donald Trump, accusing him of abusing his power, violating the Constitution, and behaving like a dictator.
The Libertarian Party of Travis County passed the resolution on Tuesday, calling for Trump’s removal from office over what they described as repeated “lawless, dictatorial pronouncements.” The resolution says Trump has ignored the Constitution and trampled on basic rights.
The strongest accusation centers on Kilmar Abrego Garcia, a legal U.S. resident and father of two, who was mistakenly deported to a high-security prison in El Salvador. The U.S. Justice Department admitted it was an “administrative error,” yet Trump’s administration has done nothing to bring him back—even after the U.S. Supreme Court ruled 9-0 that Garcia must be returned to the U.S.
El Salvador’s president, Nayib Bukele, mocked the situation, saying: “How can I return him to the United States? Like if I smuggle him into the United States? Of course I’m not going to do it. The question is preposterous.”
Trump’s response? During a joint press conference with Bukele, he said he’d be “all for” sending U.S. criminals to El Salvador. He added, “You gotta build about five more places. It’s not big enough.”
Garcia has no criminal convictions in the U.S. or El Salvador. The U.S. claims he has gang ties, but his lawyers say “the U.S. government has never produced an iota of evidence to support this unfounded accusation.” His wife also strongly denies the allegations.
The Libertarian resolution blasts Trump for refusing to correct the deportation and for pushing the idea of exiling American citizens to foreign prisons. It reads: “President Donald J. Trump stated that he wants to send U.S. citizens to foreign prisons where they would certainly have no due process of law.”
The party also points to Trump’s targeting of legal U.S. residents based on political beliefs. At least 147 foreign students had their visas revoked, many involved in pro-Palestinian activism, according to Inside Higher Ed. One student, Rumeysa Ozturk, a doctoral candidate at Tufts University, was accused of supporting Hamas—yet the government offered no proof.
The resolution states: “President Donald J. Trump and his administration have targeted legal U.S. residents for deportation due to their political viewpoints, in disregard of the First Amendment.”
The Libertarian Party of Travis County argues that Trump has repeatedly violated the rule of law, using executive orders as if they were laws and stretching old statutes like the Alien Act of 1798 to punish people during peacetime.
They summarize their position in blunt terms: “President Donald J. Trump took an oath of office to ‘preserve, protect, and defend the Constitution of the United States’ with no obvious intention of doing so.”
Trump has already survived two impeachment attempts during his presidency. The Libertarian Party, the third-largest political party in the U.S., has now added its voice—at least at the local level—to calls for his removal.
Whether other chapters follow remains to be seen, but the Travis County resolution leaves no doubt about where they stand. They accuse Trump of turning his back on the Constitution—and they want him out.
