In a recent interview with Telemundo51 of Miami, former President Donald Trump stumbled over the age of his youngest son, Barron Trump, while discussing his selection as a Florida delegate to the Republican National Convention. Trump’s misstep adds to a series of recent gaffes as he navigates legal challenges and political engagements.
During the interview, conducted by Telemundo’s Marilys Llanos, Trump expressed delight at Barron’s role as a delegate, praising his son’s academic achievements. However, Trump, who frequently boasts about “acing” a “tough” cognitive test, mistakenly stated that Barron is 17 years old.
“He’s a very young guy and he’s graduating from high school this year,” Trump said. “He’s a very good student, very smart, and I think that’s great.”
“I think it’s very interesting too,” Trump added. “But he’s pretty young, I will say — he’s 17.”
Contrary to Trump’s assertion, Barron Trump actually turned 18 in March, as highlighted by NBC News. Despite the factual error, Trump maintained his support for Barron’s involvement in political affairs, suggesting that his son would likely share his enthusiasm.
“But, uh, if they can do that, I’m all for it. I think, I’m all for it. And he probably would be, knowing him, he’d probably be for it, too,” Trump said.
Trump’s remarks come amidst ongoing legal battles, including Manhattan District Attorney Alvin Bragg’s hush money trial. Despite reports of dozing off during court proceedings, Trump brushed off such claims, attributing any closed eyes to the brightness and chilliness of the courtroom.
Steven Cheung, a spokesperson for the Trump campaign, rebuffed criticisms of the misstatement, dismissing them as symptomatic of “Trump Derangement Syndrome.”
