Donald Trump has been promoting hydroxychloroquine as a drug that can help treat/prevent coronavirus. He also announced this week that he has been taking it for the past two weeks.
But why is Trump so determined to promote this drug?
According to a New York Times report from last month, Trump’s family has investments in a French company that makes hydroxychloroquine.
According to The Times, “If hydroxychloroquine becomes an accepted treatment, several pharmaceutical companies stand to profit, including shareholders and senior executives with connections to the president. Mr. Trump himself has a small personal financial interest in Sanofi, the French drugmaker that makes Plaquenil, the brand-name version of hydroxychloroquine.”
Aside from Trump and his family’s personal stake, at least two of Trump’s closest political allies are closely connected to Sanofi as well.
We don’t know if Trump is directly promoting hydroxychloroquine to make a profit, or if he just believes that it works. But, the fact that he and his family have invested in a company that sells the drug, makes it suspicious.
