President Donald Trump, 79, has been diagnosed with chronic venous insufficiency (CVI) after undergoing medical tests for “mild swelling” in his legs and bruising on his hand, the White House confirmed Thursday.

White House Press Secretary Karoline Leavitt shared a note from Trump’s doctor explaining the results. The president underwent ultrasounds and a “comprehensive exam” that included a diagnostic vascular study. The tests revealed that Trump has CVI, a common condition in people over 70.

CVI happens when leg veins struggle to pump blood back to the heart, causing blood to pool in the legs. The Cleveland Clinic explains that it affects about 1 in 20 people, especially those over 50. It can lead to swelling, pain, and other issues, including erectile dysfunction, but is not usually life-threatening. Treatment often includes lifestyle changes like exercise, elevating the legs, and managing weight.

The White House also emphasized that there was no evidence of deep vein thrombosis (DVT), which is a more serious condition where blood clots form in the deep veins. Trump’s physician confirmed there were no signs of blood clots or arterial disease, which could cause blockages.

In addition to the swelling in his legs, recent photos showed bruising on the back of Trump’s hand. The president’s doctor said this bruising was “consistent with minor soft tissue damage from frequent handshaking.”

Despite this new diagnosis, Trump’s health was described as “excellent” just a few months ago. After his annual physical in April, Trump’s physician wrote a memo stating that the president was “fully fit to execute the duties of the Commander-in-Chief and Head of State.”

While CVI isn’t considered a major health threat, it can be painful and uncomfortable. As for the hand bruising, it seems to be a result of his regular public appearances and interactions.

Trump’s physician reassured the public that, despite these issues, there were no signs of serious health concerns.
