MSNBC’s Mika Brzezinski reacted with horror after watching clips of Donald Trump’s disjointed speech in Las Vegas, declaring his incoherence further proof of his unsuitability to ever hold the presidency again.
The “Morning Joe” co-host was alarmed by Trump’s inability to stay focused after his teleprompters apparently failed.
“Some would call that completely unfit to deal with the challenges as the leader of the free world, just completely unfit,” Brzezinski said, after viewing clips of Trump rambling about sharks and boats. “Not trying to be flip, not trying to be funny, that was just disturbing and kind of crazy talk of a guy who did not know what to say when his prompter failed.”
Producers contrasted Trump’s chaotic speech with video highlights of President Joe Biden’s dignified addresses over the weekend in Normandy, commemorating the 80th anniversary of D-Day. Historian Jon Meacham noted the stark difference.
“It’s very clear, I mean, there’s not a lot of mystery here,” said Meacham, who has contributed to Biden’s speeches. “We have a president who is trying to maintain and strengthen a post-World War II order that, for all of its imperfections, has prevailed in a largely peaceable way since those men took the beaches at Normandy and went to Berlin, prevailed in the Pacific. President [Harry S.] Truman, in a surprising turn, most people didn’t know who he was when he became president in April of 1945, grows in the job in a remarkable way, establishes NATO, establishes the Marshall Plan.”
Trump’s rally took a grotesque turn when he shamelessly exploited a woman’s recent shark attack, in which she lost her arm, as a cheap shot against electric boat engines. “I don’t care about you, I just want your vote,” Trump callously told the audience. Brzezinski was horrified by this exploitation, condemning it as a new low.
“There is so much material to work with over the weekend between these two choices,” Brzezinski remarked. “One on the right who promises to be a dictator, who promises to exact retribution on anybody who made him angry or held him accountable, and one on the left who, again, you may not agree with his policies and his legislation, even though he has accomplished more than most modern, if not all modern American presidents, he endorses democracy, agrees with democracy. He wants to preserve our democracy. There is the choice. We’ve heard it a million times, yet, and I have to say it because a lot of people are influenced by what they watch on Fox News.”
She continued, “I watch the Sunday shows, there’s all this material. There’s this craven speech in Nevada in the sweltering heat, where he flippantly talks about a woman who lost her leg in a shark attack. He makes it fodder for his speech. Let’s not even begin with the J6 ‘hostages.’ He calls them hostages at a time where there are hostages being held in one of the two major wars that President Biden is dealing with, Israeli hostages, some of them Americans. They’re being tortured and truly held captive, but he wants to say the people who defecated on the Capitol, broke in, broke windows, ran through the halls, talked about killing Nancy Pelosi and Mike Pence, those people who are being held accountable for their crimes by courts through the law, he wants to call them hostages. It’s sick, it’s depraved.”
