Former Secretary of State Hillary Clinton is sounding the alarm: what happened to Kilmar Abrego Garcia could happen to anyone.
““Before the election, I warned that there is no safe haven under authoritarianism,” Clinton warned in a post on X (formerly Twitter). “If they can ship Kilmar Abrego Garcia to a foreign prison—accused of no crime, with no trial—they can do it to anyone.”
Abrego Garcia’s case has stunned the country. He was deported to El Salvador by U.S. Immigration and Customs Enforcement (ICE), despite a judge’s ruling that he should stay in the United States. Why? Because sending him back could put his life in danger.
The Supreme Court agreed. It ordered the Trump Administration to bring him back. But the deportation had already happened.
Now, Abrego Garcia is sitting in a mega-prison in El Salvador. ICE flew him out of Maryland with hundreds of others. He has no criminal record in the U.S.
The Trump Administration insists Abrego Garcia is linked to the violent gang MS-13—an accusation with no trial and no proof in court.
Since his return to power, Donald Trump has made mass deportations a top priority, just as he promised on the campaign trail. Abrego Garcia’s case is now at the center of a heated political fight.
Clinton isn’t the only one pushing back. Senator Chris Van Hollen of Maryland flew to El Salvador this week to try to visit Abrego Garcia and push for his return.
He met with El Salvador’s Vice President Félix Ulloa but said his request to see Abrego Garcia was denied.
El Salvador’s President, Nayib Bukele, who visited the White House recently, claims he doesn’t have the power to send Abrego Garcia back to the U.S.
As of now, it’s unclear if—or when—Abrego Garcia will return to face an immigration court in the U.S.

Americans of conscience must stand against this now.
