Vice President JD Vance fired back at former White House press secretary Jen Psaki after she made a pointed joke about his marriage. On a podcast this week, Psaki suggested that Vance’s wife, Usha, might need “rescuing” from her husband.
“I think it’s disgraceful, but, of course, the second lady can speak for herself,” Vance told reporters when asked about Psaki’s comment.
Vance then pivoted to defend his relationship, painting a picture of mutual respect and admiration. “I am very lucky to have a wonderful wife,” he said. “And I know, or at least I hope, that my wife feels the same about me, but we are very lucky to have this journey. Or, I should say, I’m very lucky to go on this journey with a very loving wife.”
He added: “We’re going to keep on serving the country together. And I’m honored to have Usha by my side on this trip in particular, but always,” he added, referring to his trip to Israel.
Psaki, speaking on a podcast on Tuesday, took aim at both Vance’s marriage and his political ambitions.
“I think the little Manchurian candidate, JD Vance, wants to be president more than anything else,” she said, according to Mediaite. “I always wonder what’s going on in the mind of his wife. Like, are you OK? Please blink four times, we’ll — come over here. We’ll save you.”
She also described Vance as politically chameleon-like, saying, “I mean, he’s scarier in certain ways, in some ways. And he’s young, and ambitious, and agile in the sense that he is a chameleon who makes himself into whatever he thinks the audience wants to hear from him.”
