The State Department is looking into an incident involving Secretary of State Marco Rubio’s security detail during his recent trip to Brussels.
A Diplomatic Security Service (DSS) shift supervisor was arrested after an altercation with local police, according to reports.
A State Department spokesperson confirmed to The Hill that the DSS is aware of the incident, which occurred last Monday. “While we don’t discuss specific personnel matters, the allegations are being examined,” the spokesperson said.
The Washington Examiner reported that the supervisor was arrested on March 31 at the Hotel Amigo in Brussels, where Rubio was staying. The bodyguard reportedly became upset when the hotel staff refused to reopen the bar after hours. After staff tried to get the bodyguard to return to his room, he became physically aggressive. Police were called to the scene, and the agent was arrested following an altercation with officers.
The U.S. Embassy intervened, and the bodyguard was released later that day.
The State Department’s DSS is responsible for protecting diplomats and fighting international crimes such as passport and visa fraud.
