Two people were killed and one injured after a gunman opened fire at a church meeting near Birmingham, Alabama Thursday evening, CNN reports.
The surviving victim is being treated at a hospital for injuries, authorities said.
The gunman, who has not been identified publicly, is in custody, said Capt. Shane Ware with the Vestavia Hills Police Department.
It is unclear how many people were at the event when the shooting took place. A spokesperson for the Diocese of Alabama said the community needs to be lifted up in healing through prayer and unity.
Alabama Gov. Kay Ivey released a statement after the shooting, saying: “This should never happen — in a church, in a store, in the city, or anywhere. We continue to closely monitor the situation,” Ivey said.
The attack on the parishioners is the latest in a house of worship amid a national reckoning on gun violence across the country.
