Thursday’s House Oversight Committee meeting was a shocking train wreck, even by recent standards. Chaos erupted when Rep. Marjorie Taylor Greene (R-Ga.) made an offhand remark about Rep. Jasmine Crockett (D-Texas), sparking immediate confrontation.
Crockett accused Greene of misunderstanding the hearing’s purpose, to which Greene retorted about Crockett’s appearance.
“I think your fake eyelashes are messing up what you’re reading,” Greene told Crockett.
Committee chair James Comer (R-Ky.) intervened, while Rep. Alexandria Ocasio-Cortez (D-N.Y.) condemned Greene’s insult, demanding accountability.
After a brief suspension, Greene retracted her words without apology. The verbal sparring continued between Greene and Ocasio-Cortez, with Comer struggling to restore order.
“That is absolutely unacceptable, how dare you attack the physical appearance of another person,” Ocasio-Cortez said.
“Are your feelings hurt?” Greene said.
“Come on guys,” Comer pleaded.
“Why don’t you debate me?” Greene said.
“I think it’s self-evident,” Ocasio-Cortez said.
“Yeah, you don’t have enough intelligence,” Greene responded.
Amid parliamentary disputes, Greene was eventually allowed to speak, but tensions remained high. Crockett further challenged the committee’s standards of personal attacks, causing further uproar and necessitating a recess.
“I’m just curious, just to better understand your ruling,” Crockett said. “If someone on this committee then starts talking about somebody’s bleach blonde, bad built, butch body, that would not be engaging in personalities, correct?”
“What now?” Comer said.
Comer then suspended the hearing for several minutes so lawmakers could confer with their parliamentary experts. The meeting, originally intended to discuss efforts to hold U.S. Attorney General Merrick Garland in contempt, faced delays due to members attending Donald Trump’s trial. The prolonged hours exacerbated frustrations among lawmakers, as Rep. Jamie Raskin (D-Md.) noted.
“I think these 17-hour days might not work for us,” Rep. Jamie Raskin (D-Md.) said at one point.
