Supreme Court Justice Amy Coney Barrett is once again in the crosshairs of Trump’s most loyal supporters — this time for bucking his push to end birthright citizenship and daring to question whether his administration plans to follow the law.
During Thursday’s Supreme Court hearing on birthright citizenship, Barrett went after U.S. Solicitor General D. John Sauer for dodging a basic question: would the Trump administration obey court rulings — yes or no?
“Did I understand you correctly to tell Justice Kagan that the government wanted to reserve its right to maybe not follow a Second Circuit precedent, say, in New York, because you might disagree with the opinion?” Barrett asked directly.
Sauer squirmed. “Our general practice is to respect those precedents,” he replied, “but there are circumstances when it is not a categorical practice.”
Barrett wasn’t buying it. “This administration’s practice or the long-standing practice of the federal government?” she pressed.
When Sauer insisted this was longstanding Justice Department policy, Barrett fired back: “Really?”
Again and again, Sauer tried to blur the lines — saying the government would “generally” comply with rulings but refused to commit outright.
Barrett kept the pressure on: “So you’re still saying generally?” Sauer’s answer didn’t change. “Yes.”
The justice then raised a historic Supreme Court ruling — Cooper v. Aaron — to remind Sauer that even states had to comply with desegregation orders. Why would the federal government be above the law now?
Sauer continued to dodge, and Barrett didn’t let up.
She also questioned why the Trump administration avoided directly challenging birthright citizenship and instead focused only on killing nationwide injunctions. When Sauer blamed the risk of rushed decisions, Barrett snapped: “But the government’s done that in other cases.”
She ended her grilling with one last shot: “You would respect that judgment?” she asked after Sauer admitted the government would follow a class-action ruling. This time, Sauer finally said, “We would be bound by that judgment and so would they.”
MAGA hardliners exploded online, blasting Barrett as a traitor, a liberal, and a disaster pick by Trump.
“She is evil,” one user wrote. “Amy Coney Barrett is a Judas,” said another. “ACB is a radical liberal and Trump’s greatest mistake,” posted @Mr_NiceGuy_007.
The anger has been brewing. Last month, Barrett sided with liberals in blocking a Trump-led deportation policy. Weeks later, she joined Chief Justice Roberts and the Court’s liberal wing again — refusing to stop a judge’s order forcing the government to release nearly $2 billion in foreign aid.
Now, Trump’s base says they’ve had enough.
“Amy Coney Barrett is proving once again she may be the worst SCOTUS pick ever by a Republican,” wrote one conservative. “She has a lifetime appointment to the Supreme Court because of Donald Trump. Yet you can hear her disdain for the Trump administration.”
Another posted, “Justice Barrett was a huge mistake. Her contempt for the Trump Administration is obvious in her line of questioning.”
Some went even further.
“She needs to be removed,” wrote @Notalibtwit.
“One day when there is another revolution in this country, this depraved woman will have blood on her hands,” warned @JJRich59.
Barrett hasn’t responded publicly to the backlash. But one thing’s clear: the justice MAGA once loved is now the one they love to hate.
