Actress Shannen Doherty, known for her roles in “Beverly Hills, 90210” and “Charmed,” has passed away at the age of 53 after a lengthy battle with breast cancer, her publicist confirmed.
Doherty, a beloved actress and cancer advocate, died surrounded by loved ones, including her dog Bowie, according to her longtime publicist Leslie Sloane. The family has requested privacy during this time of mourning.
Doherty gained fame for her roles in the 1989 film “Heathers,” as Brenda Walsh in “Beverly Hills, 90210” from 1990 to 1994, and as Prue Halliwell in “Charmed” from 1998 to 2001.
Diagnosed with breast cancer in 2015, Doherty entered remission briefly before the cancer returned in 2020, progressing to stage 4 and spreading to her brain by June 2023. Throughout her illness, she courageously shared her journey on her podcast, “Let’s Be Clear with Shannen Doherty.”
Born in Memphis, Tennessee, Doherty moved to Los Angeles as a child, making her acting debut at age ten. Her career included roles in “Father Murphy,” “Little House on the Prairie,” and the 1988 dark comedy “Heathers.”
Doherty’s breakout role as Brenda on “Beverly Hills, 90210” alongside Luke Perry catapulted her to stardom. She later appeared in films like “Almost Dead” and “Mallrats” before reuniting with Aaron Spelling for “Charmed.”
In addition to acting, Doherty made occasional appearances on shows like “Riverdale” and reprised her role as Brenda Walsh in reboots of “90210.”
Reflecting on her life in 2020, Doherty spoke of gratitude for small moments and finding strength during adversity.
Her legacy is remembered not only for her contributions to television and film but also for her resilience in the face of illness and her advocacy for cancer awareness.
