A law enforcement shooting near one of Washington, D.C.’s most heavily visited landmarks prompted a lockdown and a rush of emergency response Monday afternoon, according to officials.

The United States Secret Service said in a statement posted to X that a man was shot near the Washington Monument, located on the National Mall. Authorities said the individual’s condition is currently unknown.

Officials urged the public to avoid the area as law enforcement secured the scene around the monument, a major tourist and symbolic site in the nation’s capital.

The incident also triggered security measures at nearby government buildings. Journalists at the White House, which sits close to the National Mall, reported being moved into the briefing room after the complex was placed under lockdown amid reports of gunfire.

Details surrounding what led to the shooting remain unclear, and authorities have not released additional information about the circumstances.
