GOP Rep. James Comer, leading the House Oversight and Reform Committee, spearheaded an investigation into potential links between President Joe Biden and foreign entities, only to uncover revelations about Donald Trump’s international business dealings during his presidency. A report by Democrats on the committee, developed over two years, disclosed that over $8 million from foreign governments and entities had been directed to Trump while he held the presidential office.
During a discussion on MSNBC, correspondent Ryan Nobles highlighted the comprehensive 156-page report, outlining the substantial funds flowing from foreign governments into businesses controlled by Donald Trump and his associates. Nobles recalled Trump’s 2016 campaign promise to divest his business interests into a “blind trust,” which never materialized. The report detailed Trump’s continued involvement and knowledge of day-to-day business activities despite his adult children ostensibly running the businesses.
The report specified payments from various foreign governments, with China emerging as the leading contributor over the two-year period scrutinized. This was noteworthy given Trump’s vocal criticism of China, particularly in relation to Hunter Biden, the current president’s son. Trump, during the 2020 campaign, had alleged that Biden received $1.5 billion from China.
Contrary to Republican claims, the Oversight Committee failed to substantiate significant payments to Biden. The alleged amount received through Hunter Biden had dwindled to around $4,000, a loan for a 2018 truck, which Hunter Biden repaid in monthly installments to his father. The report also highlighted funds from Saudi Arabia, which had ties to Trump’s son-in-law, Jared Kushner, receiving a $2 billion investment for his hedge fund after Trump left office.
Nobles explained that the report focused on a two-year period due to the accounting firm severing ties with Trump, leading to the release of information upon Congress’s request. House Democrats criticized Committee Chairman James Comer for not pursuing additional documents covering the full four years of Trump’s presidency.
Meanwhile, the House initiated an impeachment “inquiry” against Biden, alleging his son’s involvement in foreign business activities benefiting Biden during his vice presidency. However, Nobles noted that unlike the claims against Trump, there was no evidence of substantial payments directly benefiting Joe Biden or any proof that Biden’s role as a public official favored these foreign entities.
