Republicans are criticizing President Biden for laughing off the latest provocation from far-right Rep. Marjorie Taylor Greene at an annual Democratic gathering in Baltimore, chuckling: “Isn’t she amazing?”
Greene this week tried to pin blame on the Biden administration for fentanyl-related deaths that happened during the Trump administration when she asked Michigan mother and conservative activist Rebecca Kiessling during a hearing at Capitol Hill whether she believed the two children she lost to fentanyl in July 2020 would still be alive “if our government would secure our southern border”.
Kiessling said during the hearing that her sons’ deaths were the result of a “murder,” not an overdose.
“I don’t use the term ‘drug overdose’ because this was not an overdose. This was murder,” she said. “This is a war. Act like it. Do something.”
“This government has failed you, and it’s failing American families, and it’s failing, most of all, it’s failing our children and our young people,” Greene said during the hearing on Tuesday, overlooking the fact that it was Donald Trump who was in the White House at the time the tragedy occurred, not Biden.
While discussing Greene’s comments and the loss of Kiessling’s sons, Biden laughed.
“Isn’t she amazing? Oof,” Biden said of Greene.
“She was very specific — I shouldn’t digress, probably — I read, she was very specific recently saying that a mom, a poor mother who lost two kids to fentanyl, that I killed her sons,” the president said, addressing her comments in the hearing.
“Well, the interesting thing is, that fentanyl they took came during the last administration,” he said, before breaking off with a chuckle, according to The Hill.
“Look folks. Anyway, I don’t want to get started…”
Republicans have criticized Biden as “insensitive” for laughing at Greene while talking about the deaths. At the same time, they avoid acknowledging the fact that Greene falsely claimed that the Biden administration is responsible for the fentanyl deaths of two young men who actually died during the Trump administration.
