Dozens of Iranian drones are en route to Israel, prompting the closure of airspaces by both Israel and Jordan. The unmanned craft were detected over Iraq and are expected to arrive in Israel after several hours.

The attack follows heightened tensions following an assault on the Iranian consulate in Damascus, Syria. Tehran had promised a response to the strike in Syria earlier in the month, which resulted in the deaths of several senior military leaders.

The situation in the region has been volatile due to the ongoing conflict in Gaza. Israel initiated airstrikes, ground operations, and a blockade following a terror attack by Hamas that claimed numerous lives and resulted in hostages being taken.

Iran’s drone launch is seen as a retaliatory measure by the Israel Defense Forces (IDF). Israeli forces are on high alert, monitoring all potential targets.

Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu affirmed the readiness of Israel’s defensive systems and expressed gratitude for the US support.

Meanwhile, President Joe Biden has cut short his weekend trip and returned to the White House in response to Iran’s drone attack. National Security Council Spokesperson Adrienne Watson confirmed the airborne assault, stating that President Biden is being regularly updated on the situation.

“Iran has begun an airborne attack against Israel,” National Security Council Spokesperson Adrienne Watson said on Saturday. “President Biden is being regularly updated on the situation by his national security team and will meet with them this afternoon at the White House.”
