On Monday, FBI agents searched Donald rump’s residence on his Mar-a-Lago estate in Palm Beach, Florida. While the reason for the raid remains unclear, Trump denounced it as politically motivated in a lengthy statement, and his supporters swiftly took to social media to defend him.
In a statement posted to his Truth Social platform, the former president described his home as “under siege, raided, and occupied” despite what he said was his cooperation with “Government agencies.” Trump said FBI agents even “broke into my safe!”
Trump allies reacted by attacking federal law enforcement agencies while calling for the FBI and Justice Department to be dismantled and blasting President Joe Biden and Attorney General Merrick Garland as “Marxist thugs.”
“The FBI and the DOJ have ruthlessly violated the Constitution and law in America. Joe Biden and Merrick Garland are no more than Marxist thugs, not public servants. They’re an outrage against decency, judgment, a former President, and the American people,” right-wing pundit Lou Dobbs said in a tweet.
North Carolina GOP Rep. Don Bishop said in a tweet that the FBI and DOJ are “acting as the political enforcers of the Democrat Party,” adding that “Republicans must smash the FBI into a million pieces.” He also demanded that the FBI hand over the information used to obtain the search warrant to the House Judiciary Committee, of which he is a member, and that Garland and FBI Director Christopher Wray testify.
House Minority Leader Kevin McCarthy (R-CA) issued an ominous warning to Garland in a tweet, repeating Trump’s accusations that the DOJ had become politicized.
“When Republicans take back the House, we will conduct immediate oversight of this department, follow the facts, and leave no stone unturned,” he said. “Attorney General Garland, preserve your documents and clear your calendar.”
Florida Sen. Marco Rubio followed up in a tweet, saying: “Biden is playing with fire by using a document dispute to get the Justice Department to persecute a likely future election opponent. Because one day what goes around is going to come around.”
“The FBI raid on President Trump’s home is an unprecedented political weaponization of the Justice Department. They’ve been after President Trump as a candidate, as President, and now as a former President. Using the criminal justice system in this manner is un-American,” South Dakota Governor Kristi Noem wrote.
Fox News personality Brian Kilmeade said in a tweet that Eric Trump, son of the former president, said FBI agents were acting on behalf of the National Archives.
Other allies of Trump, such as Matt Gaetz (R-FL) and Governor Ron DeSantis (R-FL) also took to social media to defend the former president and attack law enforcement agencies.
