Donald Trump’s latest speech at the United Nations wasn’t just long—it was, in the words of one senior diplomat, “stark, raving mad.” What was supposed to be a 15-minute address ballooned into a 55-minute ramble that left the room silent, the internet buzzing, and global confidence in U.S. leadership rattled.

The prompter didn’t work. Trump complained. And then, he let it rip.

“This dude is out of his f—king mind,” wrote former MSNBC host Joy Reid, live-reacting on Bluesky. The speech, a bizarre mix of campaign talking points, personal grievances, and off-topic boasts, touched on everything from immigration in Europe to how great the U.S. economy is. At one point, Trump questioned the very existence of the UN, then added, “Your countries are going to hell.”

If this was meant to be foreign policy, no one told Trump.

“Let’s not pretend this is a foreign policy speech or dignify it by calling it one,” said former State Department spokesperson Ned Price. “This is basically MAGA madlibs.”

Trump lashed out at renewable energy, called climate change “the greatest con job ever perpetrated on the world,” and said he deserved a Nobel Peace Prize because of his aggressive military actions. “We will blow you out of existence,” he warned—without any clear context.

According to Washington Post journalist Ishaan Tharoor, a “senior foreign diplomat posted at the UN” texted him mid-speech: “This man is stark, raving mad. Do Americans not see how embarrassing this is?”

Former Obama official Joel Rubin didn’t hold back either. “This was bonkers. This was out of control. It made no strategic sense,” he said, calling the speech damaging to national security and U.S. credibility. “Apparently, the biggest threat now is renewable energy.”

Rubin emphasized the missed opportunity for real diplomacy: “There’s no plan to stop these wars. There’s no American backbone right now… we’re just not leaning in.”

International reactions were no kinder. British journalist Adam Schwartz noted, “This is what giving Trump the honor of a second UK state visit achieved. Eight days later, Trump spews outright racist lies about our capital city on the world stage.” And Pulitzer-winning columnist Anne Applebaum dryly observed, “People came from all over the world. They have serious problems to solve.”

The speech prompted real-time cringing from across media and diplomatic circles. Cartoonist Dan Perkins summed it up: “God this is just humiliating to watch.” He later added, “Really something about seeing him ramble incoherently at UNGA that drives home the sheer lunacy to which we have grown accustomed.”

David Rothkopf, a foreign policy expert, was blunt: “Watching Trump give this UN speech, the world thinks America has lost its mind. I do too.”

Joy Reid put a brutal bow on it: “I’m so embarrassed to be an American right now. Donald Trump is a senile old codger… Well done, U.S. voters. You really f—ked this one up.”

Whether you’re a diplomat, analyst, or just someone watching from home, the message was loud and clear—Trump didn’t just miss the mark at the UN, he missed the entire point.
