Outrage is mounting after Immigration and Customs Enforcement agents tackled a rape survivor to the ground moments after she testified in a New Jersey courtroom.

The incident, highlighted in an excerpt from an Atlantic report shared online, involved a woman who had appeared in court to seek a restraining order against her ex-boyfriend. She testified that he had put her in a chokehold and sexually assaulted her, causing her to lose consciousness.

According to the report, just after leaving the courthouse, the woman was approached by two plainclothes ICE officers and suddenly tackled to the ground.

The account quickly spread online, drawing sharp reactions from public figures and policy experts.

Actor Carrie Coon described the scene as “Insane misogynist military cosplay.”

Matt Kovach, an economist at Purdue Daniels School of Business, offered a more blunt assessment: “This regime is evil,” he wrote.

Immigration advocates and analysts warned that incidents like this could have far-reaching consequences beyond a single case.

“Mass deportations make us all less safe, as abusers and exploiters know that threats to call ICE will keep their victims silent,” said Aaron Reichlin-Melnick, a senior fellow at the American Immigration Council.

His point reflects a broader concern among critics: that aggressive immigration enforcement actions, particularly in or around courthouses, may discourage victims of violent crimes from coming forward or cooperating with the legal system.

Mehdi Hasan, founder and CEO of the news outlet Zeteo, also weighed in, writing simply: “Abolish ICE.”

The episode has intensified scrutiny of immigration enforcement practices, especially as they intersect with victims seeking legal protection. While ICE has not publicly detailed the specific circumstances surrounding the incident, the optics of arresting or detaining someone immediately after a court appearance have fueled criticism.

The woman at the center of the case had just participated in a legal process intended to address alleged abuse and secure her safety. Instead, the situation escalated into a confrontation with federal agents outside the courthouse.

Reactions continue to pour in. Critics argue that the incident underscores a growing tension between immigration enforcement priorities and access to justice for vulnerable individuals.
