Authorities have released disturbing video footage showing the moment when Brian Thompson, CEO of UnitedHealthcare, was shot and killed in New York City on Wednesday morning.
New York Police Commissioner Jessica Tisch called the shooting a “brazen, targeted attack.” She added, “This does not appear to be a random act of violence.” According to Tisch, the suspect waited for several minutes before spotting Thompson, who was walking toward a hotel where UnitedHealth Group was hosting an investor conference.
The shooter approached Thompson from behind and fired multiple shots, hitting him in the back and the right calf. Police said the suspect had arrived at the location about five minutes before Thompson. He was described as a light-skinned man wearing a light brown jacket, black face mask, black and white sneakers, and carrying a distinctive grey backpack.
NYPD Chief of Detectives Joseph Kenny said the motive for the killing is still unclear. “Based on the evidence we have, it seems the victim was specifically targeted, but we don’t know why,” Kenny said.

After the shooting, the suspect fled on foot and then picked up an electric CitiBike, which he used to ride into Central Park. He is still on the run, and police are offering a $10,000 reward for information that could help capture him.
Thompson, who had been with UnitedHealth since 2004, became CEO of UnitedHealthcare in 2021. Prior to that, he was the company’s chief financial officer.
UnitedHealth Group, the parent company of UnitedHealthcare, issued a statement confirming Thompson’s death. “We are deeply saddened and shocked by the passing of our dear friend and colleague Brian Thompson,” the company said. “Brian was highly respected by everyone who worked with him. Our hearts go out to his family and all who were close to him.”
The investigation into Thompson’s death is ongoing, and police continue to search for the shooter.
