Body camera footage released by the Martin County Sheriff’s Office on Monday vividly captures the arrest of 58-year-old Ryan Wesley Routh, the suspect linked to an attempted assassination of Donald Trump at his Florida golf course over the weekend.
The footage shows law enforcement officials surrounding Routh’s vehicle on the side of I-95. Routh, who allegedly aimed a semi-automatic-style rifle at the former president on Sunday afternoon at Trump National Golf Club in Palm Beach, is seen following police instructions to “take two steps to your right” and “walk straight back.”
Dressed in a pink t-shirt draped over his head and sunglasses, Routh walks backward with his arms raised, eventually coming into police custody. Officers promptly secure him, place him in handcuffs, and escort him to a patrol car for transport to the Palm Beach County jail.
Earlier that day, Routh had been spotted hiding in bushes near Trump’s golf course. A Secret Service agent noticed the barrel of a gun protruding and, after firing shots in his direction, Routh fled in a Nissan SUV.
A witness captured a photo of the SUV’s license plate, aiding law enforcement in locating and apprehending Routh. The vehicle was tracked down around 2:15 p.m. on I-95. During the traffic stop, Routh acknowledged knowing the reason for the pull-over.
Further investigation revealed that the Nissan’s license plate was registered to a stolen 2012 white Ford truck. Routh faces charges of firearm possession by a convicted felon and possession of a firearm with an obliterated serial number.
Federal authorities are treating the incident as an “attempted assassination,” but the motive remains unclear at this time.
