A person believed to be carrying a gun was taken into custody Tuesday near the U.S. Capitol, according to Capitol Police.
In a brief statement posted to X, the U.S. Capitol Police said officers made the arrest near the West Front of the Capitol building.
“Our officers just arrested a person with what appears to be a gun near the West Front of the U.S. Capitol Building,” the department wrote. “Please avoid the area. We will provide more information when new information is confirmed.”
Authorities have not yet released details about the suspect’s identity, whether the weapon was confirmed to be real, or if any charges have been filed.
The warning to avoid the area suggests police treated the situation as an active security concern, at least initially. Law enforcement presence around the Capitol is routine, but any report involving a possible firearm immediately triggers heightened response given the building’s status as one of the most secure and politically sensitive locations in the country.

As of now, officials have not indicated whether the incident is connected to any broader threat or whether anyone else was involved. More information is expected as Capitol Police confirm additional details.
