A video of Donald Trump questioning the authenticity of Native American casino operators has resurfaced following his recent remarks about Vice President Kamala Harris’ ethnicity.
In October 1993, Trump, then a businessman, testified at a congressional hearing about the potential impact of Native American casinos on his Atlantic City ventures. He had previously sued the government, arguing that these casinos enjoyed an unfair advantage due to their tax-exempt status on Native American land.
During the hearing, Trump clashed with Democratic Congressman George Miller. Trump claimed many Native American casino owners “don’t look like Indians.” Miller challenged this view, asking, “Are we judging people by their appearance to determine their qualifications?”
Trump responded, “Yes, because if you look at some of the reservations you’ve approved, they don’t look like Indians to me. Maybe it’s politically incorrect, but they don’t look like Indians to Indians.”
Miller rebuked Trump, saying, “Thank God that’s not how we determine people’s rights in this country. We’ve heard similar arguments in the past against Jews, Italians, and Black people.”
The video resurfaced in 2016 amid Trump’s “Pocahontas” remarks about Senator Elizabeth Warren’s Native American ancestry. It has gained attention again this week after Trump questioned Harris’ ethnicity, suggesting she “happened to turn Black” recently.
During an interview at the National Association of Black Journalists conference, Trump said, “I didn’t know she was Black. She happened to turn Black, and now she wants to be known as Black. Is she Indian or is she Black? I respect either, but she obviously doesn’t, because she was Indian and then suddenly became a Black person.”
Harris’ campaign criticized Trump’s comments, calling them indicative of the chaos and division characteristic of his MAGA rallies.
