The NYPD has released new photos of the suspected gunman who killed UnitedHealthcare CEO Brian Thompson in Midtown Manhattan on December 4. The images show the suspect unmasked and smiling, offering investigators a clearer look at the man they believe is responsible for the targeted attack.
New York City Mayor Eric Adams spoke on MSNBC’s Morning Joe Thursday morning, offering an update on the investigation. “We feel we’re moving at a steady pace,” he said, emphasizing that law enforcement is “on the right path” in the search for the shooter.
Mayor Adams also highlighted the city’s ongoing efforts to reduce crime, calling New York “the safest big city in America,” with crime continuing to drop year over year. “Our transit system has one of the lowest crime rates in over 14 years, and we’re removing almost 20,000 guns off our streets,” he added.
The new photos, released by the NYPD on Thursday, show the suspect without a face mask, smiling in one image. Investigators believe the man stayed at the New York International Hostel on the Upper West Side before the shooting. He was reportedly masked during his stay, but the images show a brief moment when he was unmasked.
The suspect, who was in a multi-person room with two other men, checked out of the hostel on Wednesday. While authorities have not yet identified him, they are continuing to investigate and are working to match the photos to possible suspect names.
In a statement, the NYPD confirmed that the shooting was not a random act. “All indications are that it was a premeditated, targeted attack,” the department said, continuing to ask for help in identifying the suspect.
A reward of up to $10,000 is being offered for information leading to an arrest and conviction. The investigation into the killing is ongoing.
