Kristi Noem’s Department of Homeland Security is facing heavy backlash after a series of over-the-top ICE recruitment ads sparked outrage and ridicule — featuring everything from racist slogans to a washed-up TV Superman pledging to “Save America.”
On MSNBC, anchor Ali Velshi tore into the campaign live on-air, calling out one ad in particular that reads:
“Serve your country. Defend your culture. No undergraduate degree required.”
Velshi didn’t mince words: “How totally fun! Defend your culture and no undergraduate degree required,” he said sarcastically, blasting the ad for pushing what many see as a thinly veiled white nationalist message.
But it’s not just the language that’s raising eyebrows — it’s the hiring strategy. According to Velshi, “The immigration agency is lowering the bar when it comes to hiring requirements, too.” Noem recently announced ICE will now accept applicants as young as 18, and drop the previous age cap of 40, opening the door to just about anyone.
Then came the part that left viewers stunned: Dean Cain, best known for playing Superman in the 90s, has joined the recruitment push. Velshi reported: “He shared on social media that he plans to become an ICE officer, to quote, ‘Save America.’”
That prompted a brutal reality check:
“Superman, a literal undocumented alien — like an actual alien from outer space from the planet Krypton — is now going to be an ICE agent. You cannot make this stuff up.”
Velshi also raised alarm over ICE agents now regularly carrying out arrests in plain clothes and masks — behavior more often associated with secret police than public law enforcement.
“Apparently, you don’t even need a uniform,” he said. “Covid is on the rise, so maybe they’re on to something,” he joked.
“This drive to hire more personnel seems to be ideologically driven,” Velshi warned. “It seems like the Trump administration is building up ICE to be an alternative force that’s bigger, more politically loyal, unencumbered by standards, and largely shielded from democratic accountability.”
