CNN’s Harry Enten was shocked by how quickly and strongly Americans have turned against President Donald Trump.
Enten, a data analyst, was examining the public’s growing concerns about Trump’s handling of the economy in his second term. He warned that these concerns could ultimately doom his presidency. He also pointed out that early signs from the stock market following Trump’s tariff announcement were troubling.
“If this is a boom, I’d like to know what a bust is,” Enten said. “I mean, my goodness gracious. Let’s talk about the S&P 500 – it’s dropped 15 percent under Donald Trump’s presidency. The S&P 500 has been around since 1957, and I looked back to see if any president has seen a 15 percent drop so soon after inheriting a bull market. There’s only one person on your screen – Donald John Trump. He’s the only one to see this drop so quickly after inheriting a strong market.”
Enten added, “There’s only one other president who saw a 15 percent drop this early in his term – George W. Bush in 2001. But he was inheriting the aftermath of the dot-com bubble, so this situation with Trump is completely unique. He’s starting with a bull market and then – boom – it crashes.”
Wall Street experts are now predicting a recession after Trump’s tariffs take effect, and that negative outlook is starting to affect how the public views the president.
“Look at these numbers,” Enten said. “You wouldn’t be shocked to see Trump’s net approval rating drop. In the first term, he was up by five points at this point. Now? He’s underwater by 12 points. He’s the worst ever for a president at this stage of his term. I never thought I’d see it, but as we predicted, Trump promised an economic boom. Voters believed it, but they’re not happy with what they’re seeing.”
Enten then compared Trump’s rapid decline to Jimmy Carter’s. “When you think of economic busts, you think of Jimmy Carter, right? How long did it take him to get a negative approval rating? It took him 11 months – all the way into December 1977, January 1978. Trump? He’s already at a negative approval rating just two months into his term. He’s the fastest ever to go negative.”
“The numbers don’t lie,” Enten concluded. “Two is less than 11. Trump’s approval dropped way faster than Carter’s did. Voters have turned on him already.”
