US Pentagon press secretary John Kirby has confirmed that multiple explosions outside the Kabul airport Thursday resulted in “a number of U.S. and civilian casualties” as the U.S. is working to rapidly evacuate Americans and Afghan allies from Afghanistan. Fox News reported at least three U.S. Marines are among the injured.
“We can confirm that the explosion at the Abbey Gate was the result of a complex attack that resulted in a number of US & civilian casualties,” Kirby tweeted. “We can also confirm at least one other explosion at or near the Baron Hotel, a short distance from Abbey Gate. We will continue to update.”
President Joe Biden has warned of the possibility of a terror attack at the airport as the threat became more acute, particularly naming ISIS-K in Afghanistan as the greatest threat.
He has used the imminent threat as a rationale for getting US troops out by the deadline.
Editor’s note: The term “casualties” can refer to those wounded or dead.
