MTG Says GOP Trashes Trump Behind His Back While Bowing to Him on Camera

Rep. Marjorie Taylor Greene used her 60 Minutes interview to rip open what she says is the GOP’s biggest open secret: Republicans who publicly praise Donald Trump are the same ones mocking him the second he leaves the room and the cameras are off.

Sitting down with Lesley Stahl for her first in-depth interview since announcing she’s leaving Congress, Greene didn’t hesitate when asked whether some Republican support for Trump comes from fear—especially fear of death threats, something Greene says she and her family faced during her public feud with Trump last month.

“I think they’re terrified to step out of line and get a nasty Truth Social post on them, yes,” she said.

Stahl pressed her further: Do Republicans talk differently about Trump once the cameras are off?

Greene didn’t blink. “Yes. You’d be shocked,” she said. “I watched many of my colleagues go from making fun of him, making fun of how he talks, making fun of me constantly for supporting him, to when he won the primary in 2024, they all started — excuse my language, Lesley — kissing his a** and decided to put on a MAGA hat for the first time.”

The Georgia Republican—once one of Trump’s most loyal defenders—shocked Washington last month when she announced she’ll resign on January 5. Her break from the president has been brewing for weeks, fueled by clashes with Trump and GOP leadership over multiple issues, including her push to force out the Justice Department’s files related to Jeffrey Epstein.

According to Greene, that fight set Trump off. “We did talk about the Epstein files, and he was extremely angry at me that I had signed the discharge petition to release the files,” she said.

Trump responded with fury of his own, branding Greene a “traitor” and accusing her of drifting “Far Left” in a barrage of Truth Social posts. Greene warned that Trump’s rhetoric “could lead to serious attacks” on her family—and local police later confirmed her son was targeted with a death threat amid the feud.

But once Greene announced she was resigning, Trump abruptly shifted tone, calling her a “nice person” and insisting he simply “disagreed with her philosophy.” He later told NBC News he’d “love” to see her return to politics.

Still, Greene’s message on 60 Minutes was clear: much of the GOP is putting on a show—reverence for Trump onstage, ridicule offstage.
