House Republicans are going all out in a desperate bid to obtain audio recordings of President Joe Biden’s interview in his classified documents investigation despite having the transcript of the interview. In response, MSNBC’s Joe Scarborough and Mika Brzezinski ruthlessly mocked them for debasing themselves in their futile attempts to appease Donald Trump.
Rep. Dave Joyce (R-OH) was the lone GOP voice of dissent, voting against holding Attorney General Merrick Garland in contempt for not releasing the tapes. Joyce stated he couldn’t support a resolution that would “further politicize our judicial system to score political points,” but the “Morning Joe” panel tore into the rest of the Republican conference for enthusiastically jumping on board.
“Remember, some House Republicans, like Jim Jordan (R-OH), blatantly ignored their own subpoenas from the Jan. 6 committee,” blasted Jonathan Lemire, Politico’s White House bureau chief. “It’s pure hypocrisy. The Trump campaign would love to use the Biden audio for a smear ad, but this is yet another example of Senate and House Republicans existing solely to do Trump’s bidding.”
Special counsel Robert Hur concluded Biden had kept classified files after his vice presidency ended in 2017, but doubted a conviction was possible because the 81-year-old president seemed like “an elderly man with a poor memory.” Republicans have eagerly latched onto this to derail his re-election campaign.
“They have the transcript. This is prime material for a Trump campaign ad, highlighting Biden’s age,” said Mark Leibovich of The Atlantic. “If there’s video, they’ll exploit it. But in terms of oversight, this is incredibly weak. Their attempts at impeachment and various investigations have all flopped. This is just another lame effort in that series.”
Scarborough didn’t hold back, calling out Republicans for their self-inflicted humiliation.
“You know, it’s so weak and pathetic,” he scoffed. “The Comer committee humiliating themselves, trying to create something around the, quote, ‘Biden crime family,’ trying to prove that Joe Biden did something wrong as it pertains to Hunter. They just kept humiliating themselves so much that other Republicans kept telling Comer and the committee, ‘Stop it, you’re embarrassing us.’ So this is just another example of this. They did it with [Homeland Security secretary Alejandro] Mayorkas. They keep doing this and keep humiliating themselves. There’s a better way to run a House, to be part of a conservative resistance to a president. I’m surprised the House just keeps, like, stubbing their big toe.”
Brzezinski agreed, condemning their continual failure to land any blows against Biden.
“It’s a bumbling effort to hijack the narrative with lies, and they keep thinking Americans are stupid,” she said. “But people can see through this. It’s painful to watch.”
